Dementia care

Specialist assistance delivered with consistency and compassion.

Dementia is an term for a range of progressive symptoms and conditions that affect the brain and memory. These effects on the body are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they can become severe enough to affect daily life. The symptoms that someone with dementia experiences will greatly depend on two primary factors; the parts of the brain that are affected, and the disease that is causing the dementia

Dementia affects more than 850,000 people in the UK and the figure is growing at an unprecedented rate. By 2051, over 2 million people will have been diagnosed with a type of dementia. These are not just statistics; they represent the millions of families with loved ones who require special care and support to live a fulfilled life with dementia. You might be wondering how to respond to behaviours and situations caused by dementia or how to care for your loved one with dementia in a dignified way. Through our years of providing home care to many elderly people with dementia, we have a lot of answers to these questions. We are here to help.

Caring for people with dementia at home

Dementia is a term describing symptoms caused by disorders of the brain. It does not describe a singular disease, but is an umbrella term for a range of diseases including Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Creutzfeldt-Jacob, and conditions such as Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration and Korsakoff’s syndrome (alcohol-related dementia).

Dementia is largely reported among older individuals, but is not caused by age – it can happen to anybody, though it is more commonly observed in 65-year-olds and above.

Dementia is a challenging diagnosis, with early signs often proving vague.

However, common early symptoms may include:

  • Confusion
  • Personality change
  • Reduced ability to perform everyday tasks
  • Progressive, frequent memory loss
  • Withdrawal, even apathy

In such circumstances, diagnosis by a qualified medical professional will help ensure the most appropriate course of action for sustained quality of life.
