Dementia is a term describing symptoms caused by disorders of the brain. It does not describe a singular disease, but is an umbrella term for a range of diseases including Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Creutzfeldt-Jacob, and conditions such as Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration and Korsakoff’s syndrome (alcohol-related dementia).
Dementia is largely reported among older individuals, but is not caused by age – it can happen to anybody, though it is more commonly observed in 65-year-olds and above.
